Countable nouns
Most of nouns are countable. It means you can indicate a quantity of them in an easy way. These nouns can be used in singular, when we refer just to one element, or in plural, when we refer to two or more of them.
To form the plural of countable nouns, in general, we add “s”. When the noun ends in “ch, s, sh, o, x and z” we add “es” to form the plural. If the noun ends in consonant and “y”, we change “y” for “ies”.
Examples:
Singular | Plural |
One chair | Three chairs |
An orange | Twelve oranges |
One box | Five boxes |
A sandwich | Eighteen sandwiches |
One candy | Ten candies |
A cherry | Twenty cherries |
One quiz | Two quizzes |
Nombres contables
La mayoría de los nombres en inglés son contables. Es decir se puede indicar una cantidad de ellos en forma sencilla. Estos nombres pueden usarse en singular, cuando nos referimos a un solo elemento, o en plural, cuando nos referimos a dos o más de ellos.
Para formar el plural de los nombres contables por lo general se le agrega una “s”. Cuando el nombre termina en “ch, s, sh, o, x y z” le añadimos “es” para formar el plural. Si termina en consonante e “y”, se cambia la “y” por “ies”.
Singular | Plural |
Una silla | Tres sillas |
Una naranja | Doce naranjas |
Una caja | Cinco cajas |
Un emparedado | Dieciocho emparedados |
Un caramelo | Diez caramelos |
Una cereza | Veinte cerezas |
Una evaluación | Dos evaluaciones |
Uncountable or non countable nouns
Uncountable nouns, also known as “mass nouns”, refer to elements that can no be divided in
parts, like liquids, gas and little grains. Also, uncountable nouns refer to non physical elements like feelings and abstract elements. These nouns only are used in singular.
Examples:
Type | Example |
Liquids | Water, milk |
Gas | Air, oxygen |
Grains | Rice, sugar |
Feelings | Love, happiness |
Abstract elements | Music, art |
Los nombres incontables, también conocidos como “nombres de masa”, se refieren a elementos que no pueden ser divididos en partes, como los líquidos, gases y granos pequeños. También los nombres incontables se refieren a elementos no físicos como los sentimientos y entes abstractos. Estos nombres solo se utilizan en singular.

Líquidos | Agua, leche |
Gases | Aire, oxígeno |
Granos | Arroz, Azúcar |
